Maslinic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid that is distributed in the peel of olives. Maslinic acid reduced liver weight and liver lipid accumulation and improved hepatocyte steatosis. In liver tissue, maslinic acid suppressed transcription factors involved in lipogenesis and increased adipose triglyceride lipase. In vitro, maslinic acid decreased lipogenesis by activating AMPK[3]. Maslinic acid can inhibit the DNA-binding activity of NF-κB p65 and abolish the phosphorylation of IκB-α, which is required for p65 activation. 20 μM Maslinic acid significantly suppresses TNF-α production and inhibits IL-1, IL-6, and COX-2 mRNA expression in RAW 264.7 cell. Maslinic acid (at 10 and 20 μM) significantly suppresses the DNA-binding activity of NF-κB p65 in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, Maslinic Acid (200 mg/kg in the edema model or 100 mg/kg in the arthritis model) exerted anti-inflammatory and antiarthritis effects as shown by the suppression of paw edema, arthritis score, inflammatory cells, and destruction of synovium in knee joints[4]. Maslinic acid inhibit inflammatory effects induced by sPLA2-IIA(Secretory phospholipase A2-IIA is one of the key enzymes causing lipoprotein modification and vascular inflammation), including foam cells formation and PGE2 production[5].
