描述 Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays a crucial role in the growth and functional development of the brain in infants and is necessary for maintaining normal brain function in adults. Consuming a diet rich in DHA enhances learning abilities and memory[1]. DHA is vital for various stages of brain development, including neural cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, and synaptogenesis. Its multiple double bonds and unique structure confer special membrane properties that facilitate effective cell signaling. Decreased levels of DHA are associated with various developmental disorders such as dyslexia, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia[2]. DHA also is a potent retinoid X receptor (RXR) ligand, triggering robust activation of RXR at low micromolar concentrations, with an EC50 for RXRα activation between 5-10 μM fatty acid[3].
体内研究

A study over 10 weeks demonstrated that DHA administration significantly reduces the number of reference memory errors without affecting working memory errors. It also significantly increases both the content of DHA and the DHA/arachidonic acid ratio in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex[4].

Furthermore, DHA exhibits neuroprotective effects in an experimental mouse model of Parkinson's Disease (PD). It tends to decrease brain lipid oxidation in MPTP-treated mice, although not significantly[5].
