Dendrobine, a natural product isolated and purified from the herb of Dendrobium nobile Lindl., is an antagonist of β-alanine, taurine and of presynaptic inhibition in the frog spinal cord, has antitumor activity,can inhibit the growth of A549 cells through inducing apoptosis, which is partially dependent on mitochondrial-mediated pathway, and possesses antiviral activity against influenza A viruses, including A/FM-1/1/47 (H1N1), A/Puerto Rico/8/34 H274Y (H1N1), and A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2) with IC50 values of 3.39 ± 0.32, 2.16 ± 0.91, 5.32 ± 1.68 ug/mL, respectively. Dendrobine treatment decreases mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and improves the expression of Bax and inhibited the expression of Bcl-2.
