描述 | Carvacrol is the major constituent of essential oils derived from plants. It exhibits antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anticholinesterase activity[3]. Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid phenol and majorly present in the essential oils of Lamiaceae family plants. Carvacrol treatment significantly reduced the cell viability of PC-3 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Carvacrol prevented cell cycle in G0/G1 that was associated with decline in expression of cyclin D1 and Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 4 (CDK4) and augmented expression of CDK inhibitor p21[4]. Moreover, carvacrol largely reduced the asymmetrical use of the forelimbs induced by unilateral 6-hydroxy-dopamine. Carvacrol dramatically reduced the loss of tyrosine hydroxylase immunostaining both in the substantia nigra and in the striatum that are typical of the model. Carvacrol promotes a marked neuroprotection in the 6-hydroxy-dopamine model of Parkinson's disease[5]. Carvacrol provides protection for hippocampal neurons against I/R in gerbils by inhibiting ferroptosis through increasing the expression of GPx4[6]. |
