Urolithin A is a metabolite of ellagitannin with antiproliferative and antioxidant properties. It can cross the blood brain barrier, and may have neuroprotective effects against Alzheimer’s Disease. Urolithin A has been shown to stimulate mitophagy and improve muscle function in aged animals15 and in models of muscular dystrophy,16 while also being safe, bioavailable, and able to induce mitochondrial gene expression in older adults.
Urolithin A, the intestinal microbial metabolite of ellagic acid, has the characteristics of anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferation and anti-oxidation. Urolithin A imparted cognitive protection by protecting neurons from death and triggering neurogenesis via anti-inflammatory signaling in APP/PS1 mice[3]. Urolithin A shows antiproliferative effects and inhibits T24 and Caco-2 cell growth with IC50s of 43.9 and 49 μM, respectively[3]. Moreover, inhibiting effects on cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner (IC50 = 137 ± 8.2 μM) after 24 h treatment of Urolithin A. Administration of 100–250 μM of Urolithin A results in the down-regulation of β-catenin/TCF dependent transcriptional activation in HepG2 cells[4].
