Albendazole is a derivative of benzimidazole that shows anthelmintic activity against nematode, cestode, and trematode species[3]. It inhibited HT-29 cell proliferation with an IC50 value of 0.12μM. Albendazole at a dosage of 1μM induced cell cycle arrest and apoptotic cell death in HT-29 cells at 24h post-treatment[4]. Albendazole also inhibited mammalian tubulin polymerization (IC50=6.9μM), [3H]mebendazole binding to H. contortus L3 larval tubulin (IC50=0.21μM), egg-hatch (ED50=0.38μM), and larval development activity (LD50=0.034μM)[5]. Albendazole at 150mg/kg (i.p.) suppressed tumor growth in nude mice inoculated with HT-29 cells when given as a single-dose treatment, once a week, or on alternate days for 6 weeks[4]. In mice infected with the embryonated ova of Ascaris suum, pretreatment with albendazole at 0.05% of the diet for 11 days protected mice against lethal effects of the migrating larvae[3].
